Maddie Yuille (b. 1988) is a visual artist based in London.

Her practice focuses on painting to explore a sensory depiction of human embodiment. She creates dream-like landscapes in which bodies emerge from and meld with their environment – critiquing the idea that “nature” is a realm distinct and separate from human lives. Yuille is inspired by a re-imagining of the stories of women historically accused of witchcraft (often for being “too close” to nature), and paints utopian images where these women are instead free to take pleasure in their surroundings – swimming, resting, and tending to one another, or else content in their solitude. Her paintings depict a coalescing of human bodies – moments of pleasure, play, and care both between bodies and with the landscape that holds them. Yuille is driven by the materiality of painting; her work is led by an explorative use of paint, in which she works with a mixture of ink and oils, applying and removing the paint in varied ways to create images that vibrate with a sense of irrepressible growth and movement. In this vital landscape both women and nature have agency. She strives to create paintings that have a sense of the organic to them, in which the materials used communicate a sense of the bodily experience of being human.
